BPMN, CMMN, DMN standards. When to use which?

At the request of one of our corporate client, we developed and conducted a 3-day extended training “Modelling business processes in BPMN 2.0”. The peculiarity of the training was that most of the participants took part in the standard 2-day training “Modelling business processes in BPMN 2.0” six months ago. At the basic training, most of the time was devoted to studying the elements of BPMN notation and to practising using them. At the extended training, they practiced solving non-standard cases and working out modelling patterns.

Separate attention was attributed to the new OMG standards: Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) and Decision Model and Notation (DMN). They complement and expand the BPMN standard, which encourages vendors of BPMS systems to adapt their solutions to all three standards.
According to the idea of the OMG, three standards form a triumvirate, which covers the needs of business in building business process models, cases and business rules.

When to use which standard?

The BPMN standard allows you to build a graphical representation of business process models. The notation data model provides for the subsequent execution of business processes using systems of BPMS class.

The CMMN standard allows you to build a graphical representation of the development of events in case modelling. The notation data model provides the subsequent automation of case management with the help of specialised applications.

The DMN standard allows you to build a graphical representation of decision-making rules in an organisation based on input data and business knowledge models. The notation data model provides the subsequent automation of decision making with the help of the business rules engine.

Стандарты BPMN, CMMN, DMN, описание

The ability to apply all three standards in practice will be of great help for organisation employees that are interested in digitally transforming their activities.

From the feedback of training participants:

  • The most comprehensible and effective teaching of the material. A large lot of practice and using unique elements of the notation as examples. Thank you for attention to each student.
  • The correct application of the notation elements, bon ton for modelling were well emphasised. Excellent practical examples.
  • Thank you. A very good training, a lot of practice, comprehensive teaching style. Cannot wait to start modelling 🙂

Digital Transformation: a check-list for successful transformations
Digital Transformation: a check-list for successful transfor...
As mentioned earlier, the digital transformation of organisations is inevitable. We could choose various paths for it: BI-analytics, omniscient promotion and communication, employee experience management, BPMS platforms, new products. The process of digital transformation is unique for every organisation. We have identified six components, which should be emphasised when preparing for the implementation of digital changes. Use this as a checklist before starting your project. [caption id="attachment_2979" align="aligncenter" width="493"] Рис.1. Digital-transformation, check-list[/caption] 1. Create a shared vision Before embarking on a digital transformation, formulate the need for change. The company, whose employees believe that changes are not needed, is unlikely to succeed in innovating and finding new approaches to attracting customers Get support from key stakeholders at the stage of choosing initiatives for transformation Make a clear plan for implementing initiatives (with a detailed description of the current state and the final result). This will help coordinate staff efforts and minimise potential risks 2. Form joint teams of business representatives and IT Include into the project teams specialists with a deep understanding of the business (its various functions) and IT visionaries, who are able to listen and hear. The problem of communication between business and IT is still relevant Provide an environment in which IT professionals can train business representatives in modern informational technology, and business representatives communicate to IT professionals customer needs, their "pain points", and the actions of your competitors. Focus on mutual learning Use a common language in the form of business process models and a single terminology. This will strengthen mutual understanding between business and IT. 3. Select the appropriate technology through the implementation of pilot projects Launch pilot projects and quickly test new technologies Ensure prompt changes to existing IT solutions. The speed of project implementation become of primary importance Use bimodal IT infrastructure (for example, an ERP and BPMS systems). This will allow integrating different technologies, which will become the basis for rapid changes 4. Monitor new technology regularly On a regular basis, monitor key innovative technologies. Ask yourself a question: "How can we apply this technology to our business?" Choose the technology that are available and relevant to you (see figure 2), build them in gradually into the company's business processes When adopting new technology for your company, make maximum use of your already existing infrastructure (hard & software) [caption id="attachment_2969" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Рис.2 Industry 4.0 framework (source: 2016 Global Industry 4.0 Survey)[/caption] 5. Measure success rates Measure the economic impact of new projects. The introduction of new technology should not be an end in itself For subsequent evaluation of project results, use measurable performance indicators. Achieving these indicators will stimulate the entire project team to move forward Set measurable milestones on your path to digital transformation. Track the accuracy of your movement towards the goal according to them. 6. Pay attention to the choice of an appropriate IT platform, which will become the basis for future innovations Find an IT platform that will provide integration between existing systems, and will also complement and expand their new functions Choose a system integrator that will help you implement and integrate between systems Make sure that the new IT platform will ensure reliability and dynamic development in the future. 2018 trends in project and process management
2018 trends in project and process management
The beginning of a year is the best time to take stock of the past and to look into the future. We asked the leading consultants of PMB Dmitry Lukyanov and Aleksey Gromyko to share new trends in project and process management, which will be relevant in 2018. Our consultants identified 8 main trends: The speed of change will increase. Changes have become so integral to the life of companies regardless of the scope of their activities that it already leads to integration of industries. To stay afloat in our volatile world, more and more companies will professionally manage transformation projects. Strategic project-process offices. Companies have learned to create strategies and roadmaps, but have not yet learned how to implement them. And when the question "Who is to blame?" is replaced with the question "What shall we do?", one of the best answers will be organising corporate project-process office. The absence of the one "correct" methodology. Any methodology/framework contains both applicable and not applicable recommendations for a single company. Mixed methodologies/frameworks (AgileFall, Scrumban, Lean Six Sigma, etc.) are increasingly popular. This trend will base on the need to link together the processes of large corporations and small self-organised teams. De-bureaucratisation of business processes. Long and boring regulations will continue to become less popular and attractive. They will be replaced by digitised models of business processes that can be quickly changed, supplemented and re-launched. Employees will increasingly study the company's business processes in an interactive online format. Cloud technology. Both project and process management technology are steadily migrating to the clouds. New players will be appearing on the cloud solutions market; the old ones will rethink their solutions and offer something new. The dynamics of competitive struggle promises to be very intense. The right choice of tools will largely influence how long you will not need to change them in the future ;) Fast certification. Fewer and fewer people are ready to invest in long-term certification programs to confirm their professional knowledge. The market has quickly adopted, and began to offer "fast" certification. Coming for a 2-to-3-day training, you can expect to become a certified specialist at the end of it, regardless of your current level of professional experience. The demand for this kind of certification will grow and the certification line will expand. The downside of this process is that in the eyes of business, the mere possession of a certificate will be devalued. Fast education. Because of the ever-accelerating pace of life, maintaining focus for 2, 3 or 4 days of training is becoming more difficult. Teaching programs will be shortened in time with the preservation of the topics discussed. Online formats with a tendency towards micro learning will become more and more popular. The demand for customised programs will grow, taking into account the challenges facing a particular project/team/company, at the junction of different topics and formats. Standard trainings, as we knew them before, are a thing of the past. Prioritisation and focus. Every year, the number of opportunities and ideas only increases. Three skills come to the fore: choosing the most important initiatives for implementation; creating the right conditions for the allocation of resources primarily to these initiatives; focusing on bringing these initiatives to a logical conclusion.
